Gelato is mostly seen as a seasonal food in Australia, one for when the weather turns warm. Eating gelato in Italy is just something that you do no matter what the season. We opened our Windsor store in autumn and didn’t know whether people would visit us until the weather got warmer. We didn’t have to worry. There are plenty of nights with people standing outside in their scarves and gloves eating gelato. Autumn brings flavours like citrus – oranges, mandarins, lemons, grapefruit and so on – plus apples and kiwi fruit to Pidapipo. It’s also when we get to use the honey from our rooftop beehives. Nuts and chocolate become more popular. So autumn is as good a time to eat gelato as summer, spring and winter.
